Translated from the Hebrew by  Stuart Schoffman

Uniquely written by a well-known Israeli author, this novella, which takes place in Italy, was published in English in 2023.  Unfortunately, Yehoshua had died in 2022 and his translator friend, Schoffman, had died in 2021.

Yehoshua’s work has an entrancing quality as it focuses on Rachele, a 12 year-old girl who is seeking her own identity.  Rachele learns that her father is seriously ill and how that affects her and her interactions with others, mostly adults, form the core of this tale.  One wonders about the symbolism Yehoshua presents as he wrote this story during his own health challenges.
